[Kickstarter] SteamCraft: A Steampunk Tabletop RPG

I have been pretty impressed with Perilous Journeys because it took the concept of Lejendary Adventures and made it much easier to comprehend and use; for anyone that is interested, more information can be found at their website.  I have not been to their website in a while so I decided to visit earlier.

I was surprised to learn that they have a new game - SteamCraft - that they are trying to get into distribution in game stores.  All of the information about the kickstarter can be found on the StreamCraft Kickstarter page.  The game sounds interesting and the rewards for backing  include custom dice, signed books, and even some custom steampunk goggles.  Give it a look...

  1. I've never quite understood Steampunk, but I do dig the goggles.

    1. So in an episode of the Simpsons, Homer writes a book with a group of people. He says something like, "I hope we have enough steampunk - whatever that is."

There is a big problem with steampunk in that people do not easily understand what it is. I think the problem is that too many things get labeled steampunk. The problem is that many people fail to distinguish between aesthetics and genre. Both are related to cyberpunk, but in different ways.

Steampunk aesthetics - corsets, lace, goggles, leather, brass, copper, and gears. It is a modern take on 19th century clothing that adds in technological style elements to clothing (gears and goggles). This is like cyberpunk that used black leather and added on technology to the look.

Steampunk genre - Cross the 19th century industrial revolution with the information age and 19th/early 20th century science fiction. It imagines that the Babbage Engine was built so you had the computer decades earlier. One way to look at it is to imagine a 19th century cyberpunk.

There is an old TV show called the Secret Adventures of Jules Verne. It was ahead of its time, but if you have seen it, then you have a good idea of what steampunk is. The old Wild Wild West and Brisco County Junior are proto-steampunk.

FYI, the Legend of Korra is dieselpunk in case anyone was wondering.

  2. @The Mayfly: I understand because I'm unsure also. Those goggles DO rock!

(Note: fix double reply to Mayfly when I get on my laptop instead of phone...lol.)
