Computer games have really given fighters more options than stab, swing, throw, etc. I have been doing some blog and forum digging on 4E and I am really intrigued the more I learn about it. I think this is one of the areas where computer games are more advanced and better than tabletop. Poor fighters just have hit and miss as options in games. This is why I thought 4E was on to something. It is going to stay optional in 2E. However, I might make it a standard rule for a future game.
