H is for Heavy Metal

***********Just for the sake of clarity - the theme for my A to Z postings is gaming in the 1980's with my friends.*************

Heavy Metal
Ok, here's another post from the "gamers that do more than game" category.  I'm not going to write a lot and just let the trailer speak for itself...

...and it's pretty awesome!  I remember staying up later than we were supposed to and sneaking in the other room at my buddies house running across this show just as it was starting.  Of course, his parents probably would not have approved of us watching but it was everything a group of pre-teen boys would find awesome - rock music, swords, lasers, fighting, fantastic adventures, and naked boobies...lol.  Hey, what can I say, all of us were around 11 or 12 the first time we saw it.  Don't bother with Heavy Metal 2000; it sucks.  'nuff said!

  1. Heavy Metal was the sacred grail of teenaged boys of the era. Even kids like me, who didn't like metal, could find a couple of things of interest. Woohoo!

As it was a Canadian production, several of the voice talents in Heavy Metal were members of SCTV - which I was a huge fan of; John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, and Harold Ramis.

The 70s and early 80s saw some great hipster animation; Heavy Metal, Wizards, Fantastic Planet... just some great stuff.

    1. I have watched Heavy Meetal and Wizards both in the last year. I think they hold up well. I have heard of Fantastic Planet but I do not have any details - any thoughts?

    2. Fantastic Planet (available through Netflix) is a French animated film from the early 70s (I think '73 or '74). Very surreal; very hippie.

It has a strong 'Stranger in a Strange Land' vibe, if you are familiar with that novel.

    3. I will check it out. I have Netflix.

Unfortunately, I have never read "Stranger in a Strange Land" but I do know a little bit about it. Should be a fun viewing.

    1. Awesome! I found the DVD at Wal-Mart for $7.50 about 2 years ago.

  4. This was a slamming film back in the day. The sequel was...ok.

    1. Cool. Thanks! I will definitely pay your site a visit. If the order of the films were reversed then 2000 would probably be held in better regard. Maybe...

  5. Saw it when it came out in 1981 and then again with my soon to be wife at a midnight showing. She really digs the film. You're right, the sequel was awful.

    1. Cool info. Yeah, I was expecting more of the same - maybe a new adventure for Den, plus 3 or 4 other stories. Instead, we got "that".

  6. Late comment, considering this whole event is over now. It makes me sad that I am one of the few who likes Heavy Metal 2000. I saw Heavy Metal first, and was a bit disappointed that 2000 didn't follow in its footsteps, but I thought 2000 stood on its own merits. Of course, I also was a fan of Wesley Crusher, so take my opinion for what it's worth. Lol! The game was pretty awesome, though!

    1. All comments are welcome - late, opposing, or otherwise. I am actually planning on watching 2000 again. I'll be one of the first to admit that nostalgia is a powerful thing. For example, think about the classic car movement, old music fans, or even the OSR movement in the roleplaying hobby. I want to watch 2000 with fresh eyes and try to judge it on the strength of its own. I have no problem with Wesley Crusher...lol. I might need to track down the game because it did look like it would be very cool.
